Shape-Shifting Playground
This project is now part of the permanent collection of The Toy Project a charity based in Archway. It continues a tradition of playful, sensory art by incorporating sculptures that visitors can physically interact with pieces designed to be moved, rotated, and transformed. This tactile engagement deepens the viewer's connection with the work, turning passive observation into active participation.
My research focuses on the science of creating interactive forms that respond to touch and movement, objects that invite fiddling, turning, and physical exploration. These works are inspired by natural phenomena and introduce a kinetic dimension that encourages visitors to engage with the sculptures as adult-sized fidget toys, offering a chance to re-experience the joy and wonder of childhood play.
During the exhibition, children from the local community enthusiastically interacted with the work. Now, as part of the charity’s permanent collection, the sculptures regularly travel between The Bridge School, a special needs school for children with severe learning difficulties and/or autism, and Whittington Hospital. Carefully designed for sensory engagement, these pieces continue to provide therapeutic, playful, and inclusive experiences for diverse audiences.
